People are always looking for some over-optimistic bs to help them feel good.

Too right. People are often looking for some bit of easy formulaic nonsense which will make them feel like one of the chosen ones, or to be able to do some silly ritual and have all their hearts desires fulfilled.

'The Secret' has certainly worked for the writers in terms of fooling people into making them very rich. It's a placebo for idiots. And the reason it was so easy to do is because it takes a fundamental truth and makes it into something you can effectively shop for, click your fingers and it will manifest. It buys into the profound greed and self obsession we are fed as desirable by those who seek to make money out of that stupidity by offering us crap we don't need in the first place. A vicious cycle most don't see.

Cause and effect, along with working with energies, including perceiving your own and what you are unconsciously inviting into your life do indeed bring what the quote here suggests. Often it's in realising you're inviting things you don't really want due to early conditioning which then draws you to repeat a cycle, but also in observing the patterns of energy generally and how they operate.

I've been around long enough to see 'series of events going somewhat improbably in the desired direction' and actually coming to some sort of fruition. I have also seen the fact that there is a real pattern of return, and that I have inadvertantly been used as an example to others as to how they are the cause of their own effect. This is hard to describe in this format, but essentially have their noses rubbed in their own energetic history and its results. The universe/source/karma/whatever seems to have a wicked sense of humour.

As well as a wicked sense of irony. This is seen in the way (as F.M. alluded) that we tend to get blasted by the very energies we project.
